Occupational exposure limits and toxicity data

Main risks and target organs: The heart is the main target organ. Procainamide is an antiarrhythmic agent used to suppress ventricular tachydysrhythmias. It increases the effective refractory period of the atria, and (to a lesser extent) that of the bundle of the His-Purkinje system and the ventricles. Toxic effects result from delay in conduction and depression of myocardial contractility, leading to cardiac dysrhythmia and cardiogenic shock. Its oral use is limited immunological adverse effects such as systemic lupus erythematosus in patients on chronic oral therapy.
