BIS quality control order (QCO)

Definition

An Indian government order that makes a BIS standard and licence mandatory for a product before it can be sold or imported.

Quality control orders are issued by Indian ministries under the BIS Act, 2016. Once in force, the covered products must carry the BIS standard mark under a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards. Foreign manufacturers need their own BIS licence for their plant.

Several chemicals and polymers have been brought under QCOs, and some orders have been deferred or withdrawn. Check the current list on the BIS website before you quote or ship to India.
