Regulatory
FSSAI
Definition
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, which licenses food businesses including makers and importers of food additives.
FSSAI was set up under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Businesses that manufacture, import, store or sell food in India, including food additives and processing aids, need an FSSAI registration or licence depending on size and activity. Imported food ingredients are cleared through the FSSAI import clearance system.
Suppliers of food grade chemicals in India usually show their FSSAI licence number. You can check licence status on the FSSAI portal.
