STOT (specific target organ toxicity)
Definition
A GHS hazard class for effects on particular organs after a single exposure (SE) or repeated exposure (RE).
Specific target organ toxicity covers harm to organs such as the liver, kidneys, lungs or nervous system that is not covered by other classes.
STOT SE applies to effects after one exposure. Category 1 and 2 use the health hazard pictogram, while category 3 (respiratory irritation or drowsiness and dizziness) uses the exclamation mark. STOT RE applies to effects after repeated or prolonged exposure. The hazard statement names the organ when it is known, for example H372 Causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
