About ligands for catalysis
Ligands bind to metal centres and control the activity and selectivity of metal catalysts. The group includes monodentate phosphines such as triphenylphosphine and tri-tert-butylphosphine, bulky biaryl phosphines used in palladium cross-coupling, bidentate phosphines such as dppf, Xantphos type and BINAP, chiral ligands for asymmetric hydrogenation, nitrogen ligands such as bipyridine, phenanthroline and bis(oxazolines), N-heterocyclic carbene precursors such as imidazolium salts, and salen and porphyrin ligands.
