About essential oils and natural extracts
Essential oils and natural extracts are concentrated aroma materials obtained from plants. Essential oils are produced by steam distillation or, for citrus, by cold pressing, and include orange, lemon, peppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus, lavender, clove, cedarwood, tea tree, patchouli and vetiver. Absolutes, concretes, resinoids and oleoresins are produced by solvent extraction or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction.

Natural raw materials vary by origin, harvest year and process, so their composition and price change from season to season. Many oils are rectified, deterpenated or fractionated to improve stability and solubility in beverages. They are used in flavours, fragrances, aromatherapy, cosmetics, cleaning products and pharmaceuticals.
Ask for the botanical name, plant part, country of origin, method of production, GC profile against the relevant ISO standard, optical rotation, refractive index and density. For food use, check pesticide residues and food safety certificates. Adulteration with cheaper oils or synthetic components is a known problem, so request full GC data and, for valuable oils, consider independent testing.
