How it is made

Industrially prepared by oxidation of n-decanal or by reduction of the corresponding acid.

Decanal is prepared either by hydroformylation of 1-nonene or by dehydrogenation of 1-decanol on a copper catalyst. 2-Methylnonanal is formed as a byproduct of the hydroformylation of 1-nonene. It can also be prepared by the reaction of nonanal and formaldehyde followed by hydrogenation.
