Uses and applications

What the substance is used for, by industry and function

Fentanyl (DEA Code Number: 9801) is a Schedule II controlled substance.

Schedule II Controlled Substance: (A) The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse, (B) The drug or other substance has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States or a currently accepted medical use with severe restrictions, and (C) Abuse of the drug or other substances may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.

Analgesics, Opioid, Adjuvants, Anesthesia, Narcotics, Anesthetics, Intravenous.

Veterinary medication:.

Fentanyl is a synthetic, lipophilic opioid agonist with analgesic and anesthetic properties. Fentanyl selectively binds to and activates the mu-receptor in the central nervous system (CNS) thereby mimicking the effects of endogenous opiates. Fentanyl is commonly used to treat chronic cancer pain or in anesthesia.

Pharmacology

Fentanyl is an Opioid Agonist. The mechanism of action of fentanyl is as a Full Opioid Agonist.

How it is made

One method consists of condensing propionyl chloride with N-(4-piperidyl)aniline, then treating the resulting N-(4-piperidyl)propionanilide with phenethyl chloride, aiding each condensation by the presence of a suitable dehydrochlorinating agent. Reaction of the base with an equimolar portion of citric acid yields the (1:1) citrate. (Fentanyl citrate)
