How it is made

3,3-Diethyl-2,4(1h,3h)-pyridinedione is hydroxylated @ 5-position by treatment with formaldehyde in presence of alkaline catalyst. Resulting methylol deriv is then subjected to catalytic hydrogenation whereupon ring is saturated & hydroxymethyl group is deoxygenated.
