About amphoteric surfactants
Amphoteric surfactants carry both positive and negative charges, and their behaviour changes with pH. The group includes cocamidopropyl betaine, lauryl betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, sodium cocoamphoacetate and amphodiacetate, amphopropionates, and amine oxides such as lauramine oxide, which are often grouped with them.

Amphoterics are mild on skin and eyes, boost foam and thicken anionic systems, so they are central to shampoos, baby washes, facial cleansers and hand dishwashing liquids. In industrial cleaning, some amphoterics act as hydrotropes and work in strongly alkaline or acidic cleaners. Amine oxides add grease cutting power and foam stability in dishwashing liquids and thickened bleach products.
Cocamidopropyl betaine is usually supplied at about 30 percent active matter with sodium chloride from the manufacturing process. Ask for active matter, sodium chloride, free amidoamine and dimethylaminopropylamine, since both impurities are linked to skin sensitisation, together with pH, colour and preservative. Low-salt and preservative-free grades are available for specific formulas. Amphoteric surfactants fall under HS subheading 3402.49.
