About builders and chelating agents
Builders and chelating agents soften water by binding calcium and magnesium ions, which lets surfactants clean better and prevents scale. This group covers phosphates such as sodium tripolyphosphate, zeolite A, sodium carbonate and silicates, citrates, polycarboxylates, and chelants such as EDTA, DTPA, NTA, phosphonates such as HEDP and ATMP, and biodegradable chelants such as MGDA, GLDA and sodium gluconate.

Phosphate limits in laundry and automatic dishwashing detergents in many regions moved the market to zeolites, carbonates, citrates, polycarboxylates and MGDA or GLDA. Chelants are also used in personal care, food, pulp and paper, textiles, water treatment, photography, agriculture as micronutrient chelates, and metal cleaning.
Ask for the active content, chelation value expressed as milligrams of calcium carbonate per gram, form (powder, granules or solution), pH, iron and heavy metals. For phosphonates, ask for active acid content. Readily biodegradable chelants are often needed for ecolabel products, while EDTA has poor biodegradability and faces scrutiny in some markets.
