It has a role as a dopamine receptor D2 antagonist, an alpha-adrenergic antagonist, a dopaminergic antagonist, a cholinergic antagonist, an antiemetic, a first generation antipsychotic and an EC 3.4.21.26 (prolyl oligopeptidase) inhibitor. It is an organochlorine compound, a member of phenothiazines, a N-alkylpiperazine and a N-methylpiperazine. It derives from a hydride of a 10H-phenothiazine.

How it is made

Preparation: R.J. Horclois, British patent 780193, French patent 1167627, US patent 2902484 (1957, 1958, 1959, all to Rhone-Poulenc).

A toluene solution of 1-(3-chloropropyl)-4-methylpiperazine and 2-chlorophenothiazine is refluxed with sodamide for several hours. After filtering and distilling of the toluene, the prochlorperazine is obtained by short-path distillation under high vacuum.
