About direct dyes

Direct dyes are water-soluble anionic dyes that dye cotton, viscose, linen and paper without a mordant. Their long, flat molecules, mostly sulfonated azo and stilbene structures, line up along cellulose chains and are held by hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Colour Index names start with Direct, for example Direct Black 22 or Direct Red 81.

Read more about direct dyes

Direct dyes are simple to apply and economical, so they are widely used for paper and board, cotton fabrics where top wash fastness is not needed, leather and some inks. After-treatment with cationic fixing agents improves their wet fastness. Liquid direct dyes are standard in paper mills for continuous dosing.

Specify the Colour Index name, strength, form, solubility and electrolyte tolerance, plus fastness ratings. Older benzidine based direct dyes are banned in most markets because they can release carcinogenic amines, so ask for a statement that the dye is free of restricted amines under the regulations that apply to you. Direct dyes are classified under HS subheading 3204.14.
