About disperse dyes

Disperse dyes are small, non-ionic molecules with very low water solubility. They are applied as fine dispersions and dissolve into hydrophobic fibres such as polyester, cellulose acetate and nylon at high temperature. Most are azo or anthraquinone dyes, with Colour Index names such as Disperse Blue 79 or Disperse Yellow 54.

Polyester is the world's most used fibre, which makes disperse dyes one of the largest dye classes. They are used in exhaust dyeing, continuous dyeing, textile printing and sublimation transfer printing for sportswear and signage. Dye selection depends on the energy level of the dye, which affects sublimation fastness and the dyeing temperature.

Ask for the Colour Index name, strength, the dispersant content and form (powder, grains or liquid), particle size, dispersion stability at high temperature, and fastness to light, washing and sublimation. Some disperse dyes are known skin sensitisers and appear on brand restricted substance lists, so check compliance for apparel. Disperse dyes are classified under HS subheading 3204.11.
