About acid and mordant dyes
Acid dyes are water-soluble anionic dyes applied from acidic dye baths to protein and polyamide fibres such as wool, silk and nylon, and to leather. Chemically they are mostly sulfonated azo, anthraquinone and triarylmethane dyes. The group also includes premetallised dyes, which contain chromium or cobalt complexes for better fastness, and mordant dyes, which form a metal complex on the fibre after dyeing.

Besides textiles and leather, acid dyes colour paper, inks, wood stains, anodised aluminium, soaps and detergents, and some grades are used for cosmetics and food after separate approval. Levelling acid dyes give even shades with moderate wet fastness, while milling and premetallised types give higher wash fastness on wool and nylon.
Ask for the Colour Index name, strength relative to a standard, the dyeing class, solubility, and fastness ratings for light, washing and perspiration. Check that the dye is free of restricted aromatic amines and within metal limits set by textile restricted substance lists. Acid and mordant dyes are classified under HS subheading 3204.12.
