About optical brighteners

Optical brighteners, also called fluorescent whitening agents, absorb invisible ultraviolet light and re-emit it as blue light. This hides the natural yellow cast of a material and makes it look whiter and brighter. The main chemical types are stilbene derivatives, distyrylbiphenyls, benzoxazoles and coumarins, with Colour Index names starting with Fluorescent Brightener.

Laundry detergents, paper and board, textiles, plastics and coatings are the main uses. Detergent brighteners are often distyrylbiphenyl or stilbene types, paper mills use di-, tetra- and hexa-sulfonated stilbenes depending on whether they add the brightener at the wet end or at the size press, and plastics use thermally stable benzoxazoles.

Specify the Colour Index name, active content, form (powder or liquid), E value or absorbance, solubility and compatibility with the process. Food contact paper and plastics may need specific approvals, and some brands limit brighteners in products for babies or sensitive skin. Optical brighteners are classified under HS subheading 3204.20.
