About basic and cationic dyes
Basic dyes are cationic, water-soluble dyes that carry a positive charge. They give brilliant, intense shades and are the main dye class for acrylic fibres. Well-known examples include methylene blue, crystal violet, malachite green, rhodamine B, auramine and the cationic azo dyes, with Colour Index names such as Basic Blue 9 and Basic Violet 3.

Besides acrylic textiles, basic dyes colour paper, inks, leather, wood stains and some modified polyester. Some are also used as biological stains and indicators in laboratories. Their light fastness on natural fibres is limited, which is why their main textile use is on acrylics where they bond strongly to anionic sites in the fibre.
Specify the Colour Index name, strength, form (powder or liquid), solubility, and compatibility with your dyeing process. Several basic dyes, including malachite green and crystal violet, are banned for use in food-producing animals and aquaculture, and some are classified as carcinogens, so check the rules for your use. Basic dyes fall under HS subheading 3204.13.
