About reactive dyes

Reactive dyes form a covalent bond with the fibre, mostly cellulose such as cotton and viscose, and also wool and silk. The bond gives excellent wash fastness and bright shades, which made them the leading dye class for cotton. Their reactive groups include vinyl sulfone, monochlorotriazine and bifunctional combinations, and their Colour Index names start with Reactive, such as Reactive Black 5.

They are used for exhaust and continuous dyeing of cotton knits and wovens, printing, and dyeing of leather and some paper. Dyeing needs salt and alkali, and part of the dye hydrolyses instead of fixing, so fixation rate and wash-off behaviour affect both cost and the colour of the effluent.

Specify the Colour Index name, strength against a standard, reactive system, recommended dyeing method and temperature, solubility, fixation and fastness ratings. Ask about restricted amines, heavy metals and formaldehyde in line with textile restricted substance lists. Reactive dyes are classified under HS subheading 3204.16.
