About rubber chemicals

Rubber chemicals turn natural and synthetic rubber into durable products such as tyres, belts, hoses, seals and footwear. The group covers vulcanising agents such as sulfur and insoluble sulfur, accelerators such as sulfenamides (CBS, TBBS), thiazoles (MBT, MBTS), thiurams and dithiocarbamates, activators such as zinc oxide and stearic acid, antidegradants such as 6PPD, TMQ and other antioxidants and antiozonants, retarders, peptisers, processing aids and bonding agents.

Tyre makers are the largest buyers, followed by industrial rubber goods and latex products. Accelerators control how fast and how far the rubber crosslinks, and antidegradants protect the product against heat, oxygen, ozone and flexing.

Ask for assay, melting point, ash, moisture, particle form (powder, oiled powder, granules or pre-dispersed masterbatch) and dust levels. Some accelerators release nitrosamines during vulcanisation, which is restricted in certain products, and 6PPD has come under scrutiny because of a toxic transformation product found in road runoff. Check current regulatory status and safer alternatives with your supplier.
