About flame retardants
Flame retardants slow ignition and the spread of fire in plastics, foams, textiles, wood and electronics. The group covers brominated flame retardants such as decabromodiphenyl ethane and brominated polymers, phosphorus flame retardants such as ammonium polyphosphate, red phosphorus, organophosphates and phosphinates, nitrogen-based products such as melamine cyanurate, mineral flame retardants such as aluminium trihydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, and synergists such as antimony trioxide and zinc borate.

The choice depends on the polymer, the fire standard the product must pass, such as UL 94 for plastics in electronics, and on environmental and health rules. Mineral flame retardants are used at high loadings in cables and building products, phosphorus systems in electronics and polyurethane foam, and brominated systems where high efficiency is needed.
Several older flame retardants, including PBDEs, HBCDD and some chlorinated phosphates, are restricted or banned under the Stockholm Convention, REACH or national laws, so ask for the regulatory status and halogen-free alternatives where needed. Specify particle size, surface treatment, purity and thermal stability for your process.
