About emollients

Emollients soften and smooth the skin and give a formula its feel. They include esters such as isopropyl myristate, caprylic and capric triglyceride, ethylhexyl palmitate and C12-15 alkyl benzoate, fatty alcohols such as cetyl, stearyl and cetearyl alcohol, hydrocarbons such as squalane, mineral oil, petrolatum and isododecane, silicones such as dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane, and plant oils and butters such as shea butter, jojoba oil and coconut oil.

Read more about emollients

Formulators choose emollients by spreading behaviour, from light and fast-spreading to rich and cushioning, and by polarity, which affects how well they dissolve UV filters and pigments. Many products combine several emollients to build a sensory profile, and suppliers often publish sensory and spreading data to help with selection.

Ask for the INCI name, acid value, saponification value, peroxide value, colour, odour and, for natural oils, the fatty acid profile and origin. Palm and coconut derivatives may need RSPO certification. Mineral oils and petrolatum should be cosmetic or pharmaceutical grade with low polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content. Some cyclic silicones are now restricted in rinse-off and leave-on products in the EU.
