About chiral building blocks
Chiral building blocks are single enantiomer compounds used to build molecules with defined three-dimensional structure. The group covers chiral alcohols, amines, amino alcohols, epoxides such as glycidol derivatives, hydroxy acids such as lactic and malic acid esters, amino acid-derived compounds, chiral auxiliaries such as Evans oxazolidinones, resolving agents such as tartaric acid and mandelic acid derivatives, and the chiral pool from natural products such as terpenes and sugars.

Most new drugs are developed as single enantiomers, because the two mirror images can have different activity and safety. Chemists use chiral building blocks, asymmetric catalysis or resolution to reach the right stereoisomer, and buying a chiral intermediate can shorten a route considerably.
Ask for enantiomeric excess by chiral HPLC or GC, specific rotation, chemical purity, diastereomeric ratio for compounds with more than one stereocentre, and the absolute configuration with its basis. Racemisation can happen during storage or under basic or acidic conditions for some compounds, so check stability. For scale-up, ask whether the supplier uses resolution, biocatalysis or asymmetric synthesis, since this affects cost and impurity profile.
