About aromatic building blocks
Aromatic building blocks are substituted benzene, naphthalene and biaryl compounds with reactive handles. The group covers aryl halides and triflates for cross-coupling, anilines and nitroarenes, benzoic acids and their esters, benzaldehydes, phenols and aryl ethers, benzyl halides and benzyl amines, aryl sulfonyl chlorides, aryl isocyanates and isothiocyanates, and polysubstituted arenes with defined substitution patterns.

These compounds are the most common starting points in medicinal, agrochemical and materials chemistry, and the substitution pattern on the ring often decides the activity of the final molecule. Suppliers offer large catalogues of ortho, meta and para isomers with different combinations of halogens, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, cyano and carbonyl groups.
Ask for purity by GC, HPLC or NMR, isomeric purity, melting point, water and colour. Positional isomers can be difficult to separate, so confirm the identity with NMR data for critical intermediates. Benzyl halides and sulfonyl chlorides are lachrymators and react with water, so they need careful packaging. Larger quantities of common aromatics are often available from dye and pharmaceutical intermediate producers.
