About ethers, epoxides and acetals

Ethers contain an oxygen atom bonded to two carbon atoms. The group includes simple ethers such as diethyl ether, methyl tert-butyl ether and anisole, glycol ethers such as butyl glycol and propylene glycol methyl ether, cyclic ethers such as tetrahydrofuran and dioxane, epoxides such as ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and epichlorohydrin, and acetals and ketals such as dimethoxymethane. Diphenyl ether and the polyether polyols that make polyurethanes are related products.

Ethers are used as solvents and extraction media, fuel oxygenates, anaesthetics and reaction media for organometallic chemistry. Epoxides are highly reactive intermediates that lead to glycols, surfactants, polyols and epoxy resins. Typical specifications are assay, water, peroxide content, stabiliser type and level, acidity and colour.

Many ethers form explosive peroxides when stored in contact with air, so suppliers add stabilisers such as BHT and state a shelf life. Ethylene oxide and propylene oxide are toxic, flammable gases or liquids that need pressure-rated equipment and special logistics. Ethers and ether-alcohols fall under HS heading 2909, epoxides under 2910, acetals under 2911 and cyclic ethers such as tetrahydrofuran under the heterocycle heading 2932.
