About esters and lactones

Esters form when an acid reacts with an alcohol. This group covers solvent esters such as ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, monomers such as methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and vinyl acetate, plasticizers such as phthalates, adipates and citrates, fatty acid esters such as isopropyl myristate and glyceryl stearate, flavour esters such as isoamyl acetate and ethyl butyrate, and cyclic esters, the lactones, such as gamma-butyrolactone and caprolactone. Esters of inorganic acids, including phosphate and nitrate esters, appear in neighbouring groups.

Esters are valued as solvents with pleasant odour and good evaporation rates, as monomers for acrylic and vinyl polymers, as emollients and lubricants, and as aroma ingredients. Common specifications are assay by GC, acidity, water, colour, saponification value and residual alcohol. For plasticizers and cosmetic esters, ask about the raw material origin, food contact compliance and the content of restricted substances.

Several phthalates are restricted in toys, childcare articles and electrical equipment, and some monomers need inhibitors and temperature control in transport. Esters are classified in HS chapter 29 according to the acid part, for example 2915 for acetates, 2916 for acrylates and methacrylates and 2917 for phthalates, and the lactones under heading 2932.
