About phenols
Phenols have a hydroxyl group attached directly to an aromatic ring, which makes them more acidic and more reactive than ordinary alcohols. The group includes phenol itself, the cresols and xylenols, catechol, resorcinol and hydroquinone, naphthols, alkylphenols such as nonylphenol and octylphenol, bisphenols such as bisphenol A and bisphenol F, and the hindered phenol antioxidants such as BHT and its higher molecular weight relatives.

Phenol and bisphenol A are large volume intermediates for phenolic resins, polycarbonate and epoxy resins. Other phenols are used as antioxidants and stabilisers for plastics, rubber, fuels and food, as disinfectants and preservatives, as photographic and dye intermediates, and as building blocks for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Typical specifications include assay by GC or HPLC, freezing point, colour on the APHA scale, water and the content of isomers or related phenols.
Many phenols are toxic, corrosive to skin and harmful to aquatic life, so packaging and labelling matter. Several are under regulatory pressure. Nonylphenol and its ethoxylates are restricted in many markets, and the EU has moved to ban bisphenol A in food contact materials. Phenols fall under HS heading 2907, and their halogenated, sulfonated or nitrated derivatives under 2908.
