Steroid APIs are typically made by semi-synthesis from plant sterols or from microbial transformation of steroid intermediates, so the steroid supply chain has its own specialist producers. Many hormones are active at microgram doses, which makes containment, cleaning validation and content uniformity critical. Micronised grades are common for inhalation, topical and low-dose oral products.

When sourcing, specify the ester or salt form (for example betamethasone valerate or dipropionate), micronised or non-micronised grade with particle size limits, related substances and the dossier status. Anabolic steroids and some other hormones are controlled substances in many countries. Peptide hormones need cold chain shipping and are often sold on the basis of content and potency. In customs, hormones and their derivatives fall under HS heading 2937.
